With this issue, Psychoanalytic Psychology begins its 20th year of publication! And it appears in a new, larger format that will permit more timely publication of articles. As the only psychoanalytic journal sponsored, published, written, and edited by psychologists, Psychoanalytic Psychology occupies a unique place in psychoanalytic publishing.
A new feature for 2003, and for subsequent years, will be the publication of the paper that wins the Stephen A. Mitchell Award for a paper written by a graduate student. It is hoped that this award will encourage a new generation of psychologist/psychoanalysts. It is also noteworthy that 2003 marks the 6th year that the American Psychological Association is the official publisher of our journal.
Psychoanalytic Psychology is the second largest psychoanalytic journal published in the United States and the third largest English-language psychoanalytic journal in the world. Its success will require the continued support of Division members who consider it as a place for the publication for their work, for Commentary, Clinical Notes, and Brief Reports.
Psychoanalytic Psychology has a rich heritage thanks to the vision of Helen Block Lewis, the founder of our journal, and to Betram J. Cohler, the previous editor. It is a heritage that each editor must shepherd, and I am honored and challenged to have this important task. With a larger format and continued support, the next 20 years should be as richly rewarding as the first 2 decades.
