Abstract
In this article a series of vignettes is presented illustrating the author's thesis that an essential dimension of psychological trauma is the breaking up of the unifying thread of temporality. It is proposed, and illustrated, that clinical features usually described as dissociation and multiplicity can be understood in terms of trauma's impact in disrupting the sense of being-in-time.
But only in time can the moment in the rose-garden,
The moment in the arbour where the rain beat,
The moment in the draughty church at smokefall
Be remembered; involved with past and future.
