The internalizations comprising the conscience are not a mere representation of what to expect of one's self and the environment. Such internalizations serve to relinquish incestuous object choices and derivatives and to undo and redirect dangerous hostile, competitive impulses. These internalizations are comprised of self and object-representations that are actively induced and reconstructed in the world. Further, such internalizations are organized sado-masochistically and function as a sort of normative perverse structure, reinforcing narcissistic fantasies of omnipotent control.
