This interview is an intimate conversation between Frank Ochberg, M.D., presenter at the 2012 Erikson Institute Fall Conference at the Austen Riggs Center (Untold Stories, Hidden Wounds: War Trauma and its Treatment), and M. Gerard Fromm, the Conference Director. A founding father of modern psychotraumatology and editor of the first text on the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Dr. Ochberg served on the committee that defined PTSD and has held several positions within the American Psychiatric Association and the National Institute for Mental Health, also advising the FBI, the US Secret Service, and the National Security Council. He founded Gift From Within, a nonprofit organization dedicated to those who suffer PTSD, those at risk for PTSD, and those caring for traumatized individuals and is currently Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Michigan State University and Chairman Emeritus at the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma. With the guidance of Dr. Fromm, Dr. Ochberg discusses not only the treatment of trauma, both past and present, but also his personal contributions and connections to his work. As a senior clinician and psychoanalyst, Dr. Fromm brings a psychoanalytic understanding to Dr. Ochberg's contributions, expanding the potential meanings in and behind Dr. Ochberg's interventions.
