Liza Johnson's 2011 film, Return, was screened on the opening night of the conference “Untold Stories, Hidden Wounds: War Trauma and Its Treatment” (October 12 to 14, 2012, Austen Riggs Center, Stockbridge, Massachusetts). Her work has been exhibited internationally in museums, galleries, and film festivals, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Wexner Center for the Arts (Ohio), the Walker Art Center (Minnesota), and the Center Pompidou (Paris, France), as well as at the Cannes, New York, Berlin, and Rotterdam Film Festivals. After the showing, she joined the audience for a discussion via Skype. The discussion was led by Christina Biedermann, PsyD, staff psychologist at the Austen Riggs Center, who later interviewed Ms. Johnson, as is retold here. The conversation introduces the audience not only to the film and Ms. Johnson's process of making it but also to the genre of returning-from-war narratives and the social justice movement related to them. Since the interview, the film's leading actress, Linda Cardellini, was awarded a PRISM award for accuracy in representing mental health concerns in a feature film.
