In this commentary I review some of the key points that Elliot Jurist (2014) makes in his essay on Hans Loewald's perspective on the superego and emphasize those which are most intriguing to me. I also elaborate on a dimension of Loewald's perspective that Jurist pays less attention to. I suggest that a key contribution of Loewald's writing about the superego consists of his attempt to grapple with the nature of the processes involved in the development of a genuine sense of morality.
