Using two of his own poems, the author invites a dialogue between creative writing and psychoanalysis. Classical concepts of Freud; new clinical efforts arising out of the attacks on September 11, 2001; the pressures of climate change; and new determinism all play their roles in a growing debate about a key question: How can we best describe and deal with the causes of human action today? In responding to these challenges, the author provides insight, analysis, and more questions. Strongly tempted to give up on some conundrums, he concludes with an invitation to continue the dialogue.
