The position is argued that the psychoanalytic setting gives us a unique, highly differentiated, and rich observational opportunity. And that opportunity has, inevitably, led to observations that challenge and expand any and all singularly focused theories. That, in turn, has provided us with tools for understanding the mind that are flexible and varied and that we should celebrate. Through examination of a detailed published clinical report, the danger of an “always this way” mode of working is explored. Through a focus on the intimate observation of the unfolding clinical process, and with a wide array of theories well in the back of mind, the clinician is enabled to work with maximum intimacy and immediacy with the patient. In the background, concepts of conflict, compromise formation, overdetermination, and multiple function stand ready to help us understand and cope with the unending variation of mental life.
