Knafo and Lo Bosco (2017), the coauthors of the award-winning “The Age of Perversion, Desire and Technology in Psychoanalysis and Culture”, have teamed up again for a compelling exploration of contemporary sexuality under a psychoanalytic informed frame. The age of perversion is one where technology has become intrinsically linked to sexuality. Their new book revisits the impact of that link on modern sex culture while offering contemporary practitioners novel ways to explore sex and gender of today's generation. “The New Sexual Landscape” may be viewed as an up-to-date guide to the landscape of what McDougall (1980) has termed neosexualities. The book is a kind of “Lonely Planet” survey in which 212 pages condense a rigorously researched account of sexuality and gender in our digital times. Comprehensive references and a well-organized subject index render this book into a valuable tool for clinicians. This volume may praised not only for the scope of its subject but also for the courage to integrate psychoanalysis with theoretical and empirical data from other social and humanistic disciplines.
Knafo and Lo Bosco (2017) invite the reader to a journey into the mysterious pool of desire manifested by the “human animals” that are part of us all. They attempt successfully—to delve into complex and profound changes in human sexual interactions that have taken place in the last 2 decades. The authors assert that sex, despite today's freedom to experience its different modalities, “continues to be a conundrum, just as it was for previous generations” (p. 63). They add that something about sex eludes explanation, as if it follows a logic of its own.
The authors reflect on sexual trends, viewing them as constantly evolving and transformed. The elusive realm of sex, gender, and identity is eloquently presented and discussed, with special attention to a novel sexual lexicon that is gaining prominence in psychoanalytic narratives. The current sexual era is defined by diversity
