The paper attempts to illustrate how the group provides the setting for both analysis of the interaction of internal and external objects, and the activation of mutual responsibility and concern. Together these allow the resolution of neurotic blocks to communication and at the same time promote individual maturity. There is interaction between the nature of the setting, relationships, and changes within the Group as perceived by its members. Foulkes in Group Analysis extends and adapts psychoanalytic theory and practice into the group context. As well as facilitating insight and individual restructuring, it offers direct, shared experience of changing the ways individuals relate to each other. People become more aware of themselves and each other, become more mutually responsible and capable of a more mature balance between selfishness and compassion.
