This paper deals with the history and development of the superego, that is the evolution of the internal objects from birth through infancy and childhood. It describes how primitive emotions, both negative and positive, leave a mark in the superego, remaining as the potentiality that can be reactivated. In my view the primitive and cruel aspects of the superego derive from very early frightening objects, while the ego ideal on the contrary, or the ideal of the self derive from very early idealised objects. I give two clinical examples, one to illustrate how the objects do not change and the second to show the operation and changes in the superego in the transference.
