In this book Ramon Ganzarain describes some of his thirty years' experience of working in both therapeutic and training groups. Many of the chapters have been
published elsewhere. This probably accounts for a rather ‘dated’ feel to some of the chapters, and especially in the section on training, a lack of cohesiveness in sticking to his theme of object relations and group psychotherapy.
Despite these criticisms, it is a lively book, full of rich clinical material and a clear exposition of Kleinian concepts and their relevance to primitive group phenomena. The second section of the book concentrates on technique and highlights the difficulties of working with particular patient groups, including those who have been sexually abused.
I would recommend this book to the beginning group psychotherapist. The theory is lucid and the richness of the clinical material illustrates the trials and rewards of groups in a way which the new therapeutic would find supportive.
