This paper follows the course of treatment of a child in therapy over a period of one year. Clinical material is used to illustrate the difficulties encountered in attempting to establish intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy when the child's external environment was unstable. It is hoped that some thoughts arising out of this experience may serve as guidelines for possible application to other similar cases.
