The title ably describes this excellent little book, which provides essential material for anyone looking at the area. The fact that there will be a readership for this book at all is largely due to the pioneering efforts of these authors, in the face of a happening, stillbirth, which ‘puts a heavy shadow across thought’.
In a historical introduction the authors describe the resistances they have encountered in themselves and others in the slowly developing professional awareness of the profound personal and family sequellae of these tragic events.
In the bibliography itself they have managed to gather and comment upon almost 400 writings on the subject, from about 1960 to the present day. Where suitable, they reprint the journal abstract of each article; otherwise they give a brief summary of their own. For the more important writings they add to this a critical comment on the item.
A book which I imagine will be of major help to a relatively small number of readers, but one which should certainly be held by libraries and be brought to the attention of those who work in the fields of obstetric and baby care.
