This is a description of a somewhat unusual piece of work undertaken with two brothers who were seen together on a once-a-week basis over a period of three years. Seeing them together provided the opportunity not only to work on their relationship with the therapist in the transference, as it would have been done in individual therapy, but crucially to observe and work on their relationship with each other: seeing the use they made of each other in both encountering and avoiding their conflicts; as well as the dynamics, often of a ‘gang’ kind, in which they were caught as a defence against difficult feelings.
