It is rare to be asked to review two books with exactly the same title.
The first of these, Psychoanalysis and Culture, edited by David Bell and subtitled ‘A Kleinian Perspective’, is dedicated to the work of Hanna Segal. It contains a rich range of papers, divided into two sections: ‘Art and Literature’ and ‘Mind and Society’. Most, but not all, are written by psychoanalysts.
The second book, Psychoanalysis and Culture, by Rosalind Minsky and subtitled ‘Contemporary States of Mind’, presents as its Part One an account of some central psychoanalytic thinkers, followed by an application of these ideas to aspects of changing social and societal experience.
