This is a splendid edited collection of papers based on the ‘Building Bridges’ Conference of the International Society for the Psychological Treatments of the Schizophrenias and Other Psychoses in London, October 1997. It is not however a simple reproduction of the papers from the conference. Edited conference-paper collections are typically patchy in quality and largely out of date by the time they appear. The present volume has neither of these shortcomings. The quality is high throughout and the literature reviews are remarkably up to date — reflecting no doubt the centrality of the contributing authors to the various fields of research endeavour which the book addresses. In addition the book has an overall coherence of a kind rarely encountered in edited collections where variations in style and overlap of chapter contents commonly have a distracting effect.
After an introduction by the editors, the book is divided into four principal sections. The first on ‘Cognitive Approaches’ (the terms cognitive and cognitive-behavioural appear to be used largely interchangeably in this volume) contains a chapter on CBT by Philippa Garety and colleagues, and one on compliance therapy by Peter Hayward and colleagues. The former contains a concise and up to date overview of the theoretical basis of, and diverse research findings related to, CBT with psychosis. The latter summarises intervention studies in this area but also presents a model of compliance therapy with clinical examples and a much more ‘how-to-do-it’ feel.
