In this issue of the Journal is the winner of the 2006 Annual Clinical Essay Prize, awarded by the Educational Trust of the Association for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the NHS to John Wright's paper, ‘The remains of the day: Transsexuality, psychodynamics and the modern NHS’. As usual, the quality of the papers submitted for the prize was very high, and it was difficult to choose one paper over others. However, in the end the judges were unanimous, and the winner is to be congratulated for his beautifully written, well constructed paper which contains some original ideas, derived from psychotherapy with a transsexual in an NHS setting. The paper broadens current understanding of the psychodynamics of transsexuality and may also, hopefully, influence future practice in NHS transsexual services.
The closing date for next year's Essay Prize, which is open to members of the APP, is 31 December 2006. The winner will be announced at the 2007 Annual General Meeting of the APP (details about how to submit are on the inside back cover of this issue). I would, again, encourage APP members to finish that paper which you have drafted or presented, or which you may have constructed only in your mind, and submit it for the Essay Prize. I look forward to the very great pleasure I and the other members of the judging panel, and eventually our readers, will get from it.
