This paper examines the psychological roots of the war in Gaza using Kohut's theory of narcissistic injury and the vengeful reaction it engenders. This is followed by an exploration of certain aspects of revenge, including some brain imaging findings, and its relationship to justice. The importance of humiliation in feeding the cycle of narcissistic injury leading to revenge, leading to further humiliation, leading to further revenge, is discussed. The cycle can be self-perpetuating as we are currently witnessing in Gaza.
