Valentine, C. W. Reflexcs in Early Childhood.—This is a study of the development of the reflexes in infancy; their variability, evanescence, inhibition and relations to instincts. These observations were made upon two boys and three girls of his own. Chiefly in one boy, B., eyeblinking, finger grasping, arm raising, walking, sucking were those chiefly observed. It contains a number of interesting observations but no psychoanalytic material.
GOOD, T. S. Outpatient Treatment of Psychoneuroses and Psycroses.—The Oxford Outpatient Clinic was opened in . One thousand, one hundred and one patients were treated in eight years. Psychotherapy was limited to persuasion, suggestion and explanation. Psychoanalysis is said to be the most useful form of psychotherapy if used by the properly trained. No psychoanalytic material is reported however.
This paper was discussed pessimistically by Mapother, more optimistically by Crichton-Miller, and Rickman gives an excellent résumé of what can be done by psychoanalysis in an outpatient clinic.
PAYNE, S. M. Super-Ego Formation and Function.—A very careful and valuable contribution to Freud's metapsychological formulation of the super ego. She first presents a general summary of Freud's views and the studies of Jones, Horney, Reich, Glover, Reik and Alexander bearing upon the problem.
