This book presents painstaking research extending over about twenty years. Nine thousand items are listed. The annotations and index are more thorough than usual. It is surprising to find in the Preface that the Bibliotheque Nationale at Paris failed to give courteous coöperation, such as other great libraries furnished. The chief shortcomings are due to the closing of the list a few years ago and the consequent omission of some recent material from the psychoanalysts. There seems to be also a shortage of German material. One important item is the German translation of Jacob Anton Dulaure: Die Zeugung in Glauben Sitten und Brauchen der Völker, Leipzig, 1909. By reason of the very extensive additional footnotes, index, and illustrations, this becomes one of the most important books on Phallic Worship. Books of John Davenport are not listed.
Notwithstanding such minor shortcomings, the book must be described as one of extraordinary wide research and reading, accompanied by very intelligent editing. No psychoanalyst seeking for anthropological material that may be illustrative of his psychologic theories can afford to overlook this bibliography.
