Another one of Dr. Stekel's fascinating books is this “Primer for Mothers.” It contains a discussion of the great majority of serious problems from birth to marriage with which the parent will have to contend. Each one of these problems is taken up in a letter to a hypothetical mother in response to equally hypothetical queries, and the questions are examined, commented upon, and advice given. One is impressed, on reading the book, with the feeling of certainty which the author has in giving the advice, and one is impressed also that this feeling of certainty comes from a rich clinical experience from which he quotes freely to illustrate his various points. To be sure, for the most part his Primer for Mothers is based upon what the psychoanalyst learns of the youth of his patients when they come to him with their troubles as adults, but in recent years Dr. Stekel has been more definitely interested in the problems of children and has been training assistants to handle these young folks. The work might with value be read by all mothers, prospective or actual.
