This little monograph is a concise review of the Freudian doctrines and their relationship to various other sciences and philosophies, with due consideration to the special trends that have developed out of Freud's original concepts. The first chapter deals with the genesis of Freud's postulations, in which the author has utilized a comprehensive knowledge, not only of psychoanalytic literature, but that of general and special psychology,
philosophy, and anthropology as found in the German, French, and English languages.
The second chapter describes the origin, extension, and application of the psychology of the individual as developed by Adler and his followers. The third chapter is utilized in a simple presentation of psychosynthesis according to the ideas of Jung and his school. The fourth chapter is devoted to biodynamic orientations and to evolutionary principles, the type of work that JellifTe has been doing in the United States. Several of Jelliffe's investigations have been most liberally presented and quoted in this section. The fifth and final chapter takes into consideration the anal erotic complexes in mental disorders, various perversions, oral erotic components, and some of the important instinctive drives.
Dr. Ramos has rendered a valuable service, as such a review in the Portuguese language of the outstanding concepts in the field of psychoanalysis should do much to disseminate knowledge to those physicians and students who are unable or lack the opportunity to read the original publications.
