After thirty years experimentation with Conditioned Reflexes Pavlov and his pupils are coming to see the Conditioned Reflexes as extremely complicated phenomena with a large number of variable factors. For one thing, the dogs, which are the classical animals used in the experiments, were found to vary a great deal in their degree of response to stimuli, due to the variation in length of time for training of responses. Hence the theory of psychological types in dogs, somewhat similar to the old Greek idea of temperaments. The present volume is a series of collected papers written by members of the staff of the Ukrainian Psychological Institute in Kharkov under the direction of Prof. Volborth who is one of the most gifted pupils of Pavlov. The papers are extremely technical, especially those dealing with the establishment of “negative “reflexes in dogs.
The volume contains abstracts in English and for anyone interested in this field it would be a very valuable source of reference. The director of the Institute should be complimented for his untiring effort to acquaint the English speaking countries with the work of the Institute, both by sending the volume to the various scientific societies in America and also by providing abstracts in English.
