Dr. Deutsch, an analyst of Vienna, has presented her material in the form of lectures which deal, respectively, with the actual conflict and the various phenomena of hysteria, of the phobias, the obsessional neuroses, and melancholia. The material presented is from actual cases analyzed by her, and is briefed and set forth only in so far as to illustrate the points she desires to make in her presentation. The result is a very interesting running commentary upon cases briefly presented, including references to general principles and to matters of technique. It is presented as a textbook of psychoanalysis but it is hardly that. No one thus far has been able to negotiate this order, the material is so extensive and complicated that it is difficult to see just how such a textbook could be written. But this little book serves its purpose as illuminating along the lines that a textbook would probably have to take and probably represents a stage in the growth of what will ultimately be presented in that form by someone some day.
