This is a very interestingly written, straight-forward, and simple statement of present-day penology as it is found in operation in the criminal courts, the prisons, the reformatories throughout the land. It gives some idea of how we have arrived at the present state of affairs and how much further we have to go in the way of improvement if our practices and our institutions are to keep pace with developments along these lines. The reviewer knows no better source of information for the lay reader on the various subjects treated of in this book.
