This book of Hendrick's is really a pleasure to read after so many of the expositions of the past. It is, as perhaps one might reasonably expect, an improvement upon them, because, after all, psychoanalysis grows, develops, advances, and its exposition naturally, therefore, offers increasing opportunities. The book is well written, it is readable, and the case material is used effectively. It presents its matter in a form which conceivably is adequate for the educated layman who can approach the question with an open mind. The discussion of the transference is especially commended as so much of the criticisms of psychoanalysis revolve about this subject. The book can be recommended to readers with an appropriate background.
