An exceedingly interesting account of the brain from the point of view of the development of the peculiarly human characteristics which permit man to carry out skilled activities in place of instinctive ones, to be capable of volitional control and the utilization of the symbolic mechanisms of language, written and spoken, and develop the possibilities of attention and educability. All these characteristics are dependent upon the development of the neopallium, particularly that portion of it which is known as the prefrontal cortex. The author has examined the brains of aments, which show clearly defective development which can be correlated with the various known stages of development of the brain, intra- and extra-uterine, and he has also correlated degeneration, particularly in the frontal region with dementia and in the sensory region with various sensory disturbances. Correlations in the motor regions are of course included, but they have been so well known that they are not stressed.
A very readable pamphlet by a very notable contributor to the histology of the cortex.
