This book of 200 pages by Dr. Yarros, a prominent woman physician and professor of Social Hygiene in the University of Illinois, is written from her clinical and consultation experience of twenty years' practice in dispensary and in social hygiene clinics. This little volume is presented for lay persons and deals with the relationship problems of the family. Her contribution presents to the understanding, the ever changing views and trends of problems of social hygiene of this century in the United States, with its freedom of action, thought and speech in sexual matters in all classes of society, in contrast to the puritanical ideas of a generation ago.
The scope of the book of ten chapters can be gained from the following table of contents: The Rediscovery of Sex; The Old and the New Attitudes; What is Wrong with Marriage ? The Right and Wrong Initiation; Trial Marriage—Why Not?; Prostitution, Promiscuity, and Venereal Disease; Sex Education—What and How; Birth Control: Objections Answered; Eugenics and Birth Control; Marriage: The Next Steps; Appendix: The Social Hygiene Center, and the New Service for Premarital and Marital Guidance.
Professor Yarros deals courageously with the radical problems of social hygiene, yet her views are conservative. There is nothing, in her opinion, immoral about trial marriage, but for the preservation of the family life, she advocates monogamy, rinding little hope for legal recognition of such marriage; promiscuous and illicit sex relations result in no permanent satisfaction or happiness.
