The first edition of this excellent little book was reviewed in Psychoanal. Rev., Vol. XVI, page 462. The present—the second edition—has a number of changes, mostly in the way of additions. Three new chapters have been added—Chapter II on Germinal Inheritance in the Psychoses, Chapter XI on Mental Disturbances in Pernicious Anemia, and Chapter XVII on Mental Disorder and Deficient Oxidation. Additional matter covering the statistical results of the malarial treatment of General Paresis has been included in Chapter IX, wrongly stated as Chapter VIII in the Preface. The problem of Reversibility in the Psychoses is discussed in Chapter XIII, Part III, wrongly stated as Part IV in the Preface. The account of Fever Therapy, Prolonged Narcosis, Pharmaco-dynamic Methods of Stimulation is given in Chapter XIV, Part III, wrongly stated as Part IV in the Preface. The work of Dr. Lewis, referred to on pages 276 and 280 as Nolan and Lewis, should be Nolan D. C. Lewis. These are minor unimportant corrections made for the benefit of the author.
The book is an excellent presentation of recent developments and is the sort of reference book that is useful for the staff of a mental hospital.
