As the title suggests this volume is an attempted analogy between yoga as an example of the philosophy of the Orient and psychoanalysis. The author discusses yoga as a philosophy rather than a religion since she maintains that the theistic concept is not essential. The aim of both yoga and psychoanalysis is similar; the reasons for undertaking either type of study are identical; and the methods of both have something in common. The principal difference is in the end result. The individual who has gone through with a successful analysis is enabled to make a better social adjustment in the environment in which he happens to be placed. The yogi, on the other hand, tends to become more comfortable at the expense of social adjustment—by withdrawal from the social situation. (CAMPBELL.)
