It is with both a deep sense of grief and a sense of pleasure that I pick up there recollections of my old friend, Dr. Dewey, and pay tribute to his life in the few words that such a book as his warrants in a review in the PSYCHOANALYTIC REVIEW.
Dr. Dewey started off as a simple country boy and his early life is like that of many other country boys, but he knew how to use the opportunities that Fate placed in his way and he finally found himself graduating in medicine at the University of Michigan. Following this he spent a period of wonderful experiences as a physician in the German Army during the Franco-Prussian War, and then came back to this country to head up the building and the organization of the Kankakee State Hospital in Illinois.
The book, which covers the period from his birth in 1845 to a little while before he died at the age of eighty-eight, is especially interesting to those who have lived through some of the experiences that he describes.
