Jones, E. The Phallic Phase.—The evolution of sexuality has had a long history behind it. This is admittedly reflected in the ontogenetic unfolding in men and women and only in comparatively recent years have the obscurities in this unfolding been at all approached. Jones makes mention of this for female sexuality and also purposes to study it in male sexuality. He selects the theme of what he would call the phallic phase. He has already maintained for female sexuality that it represented a secondary solution of psychical conflict, rather than a direct developmental process, a view contested by Freud and Horney. Freud had emphasized the distinction of penis, and no-penis. The boy believes all are in the penis class and on discovering the female difference is put to it to adjust. Castration fear is one of the methods. The girl adjusts as mutilated. Both strive against accepting castration. This is as Freud pictured it with its earlier proto-phallic and its later deuteron-phallic stages. The boy surrenders some of his incestuous heterosexual impluses in response to the castration anxiety. It enforces the girl's heterosexual object search. The boy develops more and more curiosity about his own organ and compares it with others. Inhibited penetration is one of the checking results of this narcissistic phallicism. The undiscovered vagina however is not a primary blindness. It is a ‘denied’ or repressed vagina. Here as elsewhere there is unconscious knowledge. There is however ‘horror’ of the vagina.
