This is a worthy addition to the lay literature of sexual knowledge in relation to the problems of marital adjustment. The author is a clergyman with many years’ experience in religious mission work, during which his large acquaintance with many types of people and with their personal problems impressed upon him the need for more adequate sex enlightenment. Since its first publication in 1936 it has found wide acceptance and use, as well as commendation from medical specialists. It is here reissued after thorough revisions supervised by physicians especially concerned with the conflicts it sets out to lighten. There has been additional matter relative to psychological aspects and questions of endocrinology.
The wide field covered, extending from outlines of physiological information to certain points in individual psychological reaction to problems of sexual adaptation, is succinctly presented. The specific values of the author's work are indicated by Robert L. Dickinson in the foreword: “One who has watched and sincerely appreciated the many years of self-sacrificing endeavor on the part of this pioneer in marriage counseling welcomes the appearance of his teaching in the form of a book. It meets the particular needs of people reared in that atmosphere of church homes that looks askance at almost all sex impulse or manifestation.” It may be well recommended as an introductory essay on the sexual questions which are at once the most important in healthful adaptation and the most conducive to conflict and worry among uninformed people. The nature of its aims, to clarify elements of external adaptation, has together with its scope tended to exclude the internal elements which make up the matter of psychoanalytic education.
