Dr. Alexander Hartwich of Vienna has seen fit to offer a revised edition of von Krafft-Ebing's celebrated work, Psychopathia sexualis. He tells us in his Vorwort he has shortened it and has introduced some of the new conceptions concerning the subject derived from endocrinology and “deep psychology”. To this a short appendix on therapy has been added.
The book has been greatly shortened, perhaps to its advantage. As to the new conceptions we find very few references to them. A line or a case history from Havelock Ellis or Stekel; the statement that Freud's idea of the ‘polymorphous perverse’ should read; “sexually undifferentiated”, and this is about the extent to which the newer psychoanalytic conceptions have been introduced. Practically nothing of the newer endocrinology do we find.
In short the work remains the old descriptive Krafft-Ebing, of itself of value as such and for its time, but of the newer studies which definitely date, outmode, and render the Krafft-Ebing conceptions no longer valuable, hardly a peep.
