Dr. Sands' useful book here appears in a new edition with additional matter on the endocrinopathies and a thorough revision of the whole text, save for the retention of the McDougall concepts of ‘instinct’, which is here used instead of the better terms impulse, or drive, or need. Instincts, we hold, are more primitive, belong to all organisms, and the concept should be circumscribed.
We have had occasion to commend this work for its clarity of expression, its firm grasp of essentials and its definite practical value. The new edition has all of these virtues and deserves the recognition which the previous issues have engendered.
