Dr. Dunbar of Columbia University performed a notable service to medicine when she issued the first edition of this most valuable work. That its merits have been appreciated is evidenced by the appearance of a second edition within the short space of three years.
This second edition contains some 22 pages of a supplementary Introduction of much interest. Otherwise the work is largely a reprint with 107 added bibliographical references, which have not been included in the Index.
The explanations here offered for not making a thorough revision are well founded. In the first place bibliographies need no reediting and secondly Dr. Dunbar has been chiefly instrumental in launching a new quarterly, “Psychosomatic Medicine,” which is to serve the purpose of offering original studies and of keeping the bibliography to date.
Inasmuch as the major gains in understanding of psychosomatic interrelationships have stemmed from Freud's evolutionary and revolutionary studies, readers of the psychoanalytic review should know of both of these enterprises and give them their heartiest support. They are indispensable for reference and full of promise for the future.
