The use of hashish, originally recommended for its analgesic-soporific qualities, has come to be an abuse and smokers of the weed have increased to such an extent that a work of this kind is imperative.
It deals with the history of the vice, its distribution, in foreign lands as well as here in the United States, the methods of use, acute and chronic effects, therapeutic applications, pharmacological and chemical considerations. It would seem that its aphrodisiac qualities are much exaggerated although the familiar “regression to the omnipotency” levels of the unconscious is undoubtedly achieved.
The general effects are well described but there is little or no psychoanalytic material of value in the book, in spite of Bromberg's excellent study.
