This is an account of an individual development of homosexuality which, presented under a pseudonym, traces retrospectively the awareness of difficulties and the subsequent effort to make an adaptation within the lines of her aberration. The background of the earlier years is given only slightly. The major stress is on the emotional configurations and attachments preceding and accompanying shifting states of integration where through sublimated activities of special study and teaching it was possible to attain degrees of social and creative reciprocity with her environment.
Despite verbal salutes to Freud and psychoanalysis there is no shred of evidence of access to unconscious processes or studies in the genesis of female homosexuality made possible by psychoanalytic work. Objectively the book does not get outside the circuit between the two abstract poles “normality” and “homosexuality”. It is an apologia from the standpoint of the latter, thus having definite limitations as to objectivity and psychobiological insight. It is mainly for this reason that most of the characterizations are confined to a two-dimensional quality, not coming into any life of their own but existing only in terms of their negative or positive value for the author's narcissism.
The general lack of any coming to grips with the inner instinctual factors involved is indicated at the outset, in a foreword by Victor Robinson striking the endocrinological note.
