Herein may be found some 27 essays written or broadcast during the past seven years by this eminent biologist and one who writing “Why
I am a Materialist” (p. 25) still shows himself to have what passes, in the best sense, “common sense.”
Unsolved problems of science constitute the warp of the fabric, the woof is a loose pattern of genial, good natured, reasonable observations on the present day world by an intelligent, witty and alert English physiologist, biologist and if one will, sociologist.
Naturally the political situation in Europe is discussed. Not in the set phrases of much present-day lowery criticism of the “other fellow,” but in measured reasonable language. He is “agin” much modern sociological cant and to this reviewer his broad humanitarian portrayal of the present-day political mess is helpful. We feel sure our readers will derive much enjoyment and not a little profit from reading it. Certainly those with concrete fixed political ideas should read it for of such the Kingdom of Heaven is a mirage.
