Largely through the efforts of Dr. Franklin G. Ebaugh, who has provided a preface for the present brief handbook, there was established in 1934 a Psychiatric Liaison Department of the Colorado General and Psychopathic Hospitals. Dr. Billings is at present its Director and in the matter of the work at hand has provided for extended use the main purposes for which the Liaison Department was set up.
The text is divided into five sections: Psychobiology; Psychiatric Examination Procedures; General Psychopathology; General Principles of Psychiatry; Selected References to Other Works Dealing with Personality Functioning and Psychiatry. The chief aims include the demonstration of the common groundwork of the various medical disciplines and psychiatry; the concrete channels through which psychiatric clinical methods and those of general medicine are integrated; and the means of achieving both a better understanding of the conception of the total personality and the way to direct the fruits of psychiatric knowledge to the work of the general physician.
The text offers an outline of the psychobiological concepts such as have been elaborated in the Meyerian school, where the author's training in psychiatry was followed. It presents in brief form those constructions deemed essential for the elementary orientation of student and practitioner toward actual work in the mental sciences. While its brevity bars any more extended use, it may be commended regarding the purposes for which it was written.
