Dr. Lewis, at present Director of the New York Psychiatric Institute and Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University, delivered the Salmon Lectures which make up the volume to hand.
There are six lectures, which with a short and stimulating Introduction make up the seven chapters of the book. In this Introduction the author offers an excellent resume of what psychiatry stands for. It is a wide embracing discipline as here dealt with, and not just a bit of mental hospital jargon.
Throughout we note the author's wide grasp and penetrating understanding of the psychiatric discipline, combined with a just appraisal of the results of the various workers in the field, ancient and modern.
We can recommend it most highly and compliment the author for his historical knowledge and judicious phrasing of the stream of the thoughts and pronouncements of the makers of the psychiatric opus.
