The exploration of the fundamental problems of aesthetics, with the help of Freud's great discovery, is the thread upon which these very readable essays are gathered.
Starting from day dreams as the common form of fantasy Dr. Sachs shows in later sections how genius picks up a time-worn piece of material and transforms it into a masterpiece; further how inhibitions can influence the course of civilization and finally in a last chapter, leaning on Freud's, The Man Moses, he would point out how in the scientific mind the search for truth is much the same as in that of the artist for beauty.
Although appearing previously in partly scattered periodicals it is fortunate that the publisher sought to group these essays into a consistent volume. We can recommend them most enthusiastically.
