To review a book that most people would consider timely places a burden on the reviewer. When such a book is written by seventeen authors it becomes a thankless job, for no one involved will be satisfied. The reviewer solves it by giving little glimpses of the authors. Allport boiled down says democratic morale is different because it includes all, the whole man, all men, and minority groups. French: rebellion against tyrany is important in a democracy; to survive democracy needs public discussion and mutual willingness for sacrifice. Watson: chief factors in morale are positive goal, togetherness, awareness of common danger, something each can do, sense of advance. Lewin: A basic element of high morale is a positive time perspective guided by worthwhile goals. Bateson: the peace treaty must be one that people will fight for and it must bring out the best characteristics of our enemies. Murphy: sanctions “Life, liberty, and happiness for children, now.” Lippitt: Before Pearl Harbor youth groups showed no interest in war but after they did very much. Bavelas: morale is one aspect of social well-being where it is extremely dangerous for a leader to build upon a foundation of falsehood. Sargent: Sincere common goals which can be attained are most important for morale. Newcomb: news may release from discouragement and futility in war outlook. Rugg: From the beginning of the war in Europe, the American people have wanted to help England and at the same time have wanted to keep out of the war. Belden: previously reluctant, college youths now are willing to serve. Klineberg: Jews will feel that they have a real stake in the preservation of American democracy. Clarke: there must be a reversal of the American policy of racial exploitation and humiliation (of the Negro). Ketchum and Bois: Canadian morale is not yet all that we could wish for; these days are trying for French Canadians. Watson: the reviewer believes that Watson on morale during unemployment is not half so good
