This volume was prepared for the Commission on Secondary School Curriculum of the Progressive Education Association. It is based on work done since 1932. The case-history method was used and many workers obtained the data. The raw material consisted of six hundred histories. The personality is conceived of as a functionally interrelated whole. The individual is emphasized as such rather than the group
averages and statistical norms. About two-thirds of the volume is devoted to a detailed reporting of four cases.
It is concluded that the adolescent period brings the manifold task involving the physical, emotional, social and intellectual aspects of the personality. Needs develop which must be met if the adolescent is to move forward successfully. Evaluation of behavior is important. The school is but one segment of the adolescent's experience; the total situation must be understood. It is essential that the curricular material be chosen relevant to needs and that instruction be individualized. To disregard social and vocational orientation constitutes a serious omission in dealing with adolescent life. Motivation is inseparable from effective learning and sustained interest. The educator faces a responsibility which requires insight and understanding. The author contributes to an active, idealistic, and forward looking view in this volume; it should be welcomed in educational circles.
