Paden presents a Study of the Imagery in Charles and Alfred Tennyson's earlier work. It is a fascinating study in which Tennyson's earlier work, his reading, and his life experiences are examined together with their mutual interfluences. The searching out of this material was a stupendous job. Paden accepts the concepts formulated within psychiatry, makes ample use of them and urges their further use. The study is thorough, learned and well documented. No truly formal conclusions are drawn. From the analytic angle, the reviewer would note that some of the views quoted from George Stanley Faber's Horae Mosaicae, etc. , foreshadow something of the approach of Freud.
