The authors are Professor of Sociology and Research Assistant at the University of Pennsylvania. The volume is subtitled An Introduction to
the Study of Child Behavior. The work is what the authors call an“unorganized cooperative venture.” Dr. Bossard “began with definite convictions concerning the situational approach to the study of behavior, the meaning of such an approach, what it should include, and its general importance.”Mrs. Boll began “with the idea of classification in science.” The result is a very useful book containing considerable information, especially valuable to sociologists. The history of the Situational Approach is reviewed. There then follow chapters on Family Situations, Family Classifications, Family Patterns, Intra-family Relationships, and External Factors. There is a bibliography of about two hundred and fifty items.
