The author is Professor of Child Psychology at the State University of Iowa. The study was fostered by the Social Science Research Council on the basis of a desire for a report on the scientific status of Freudian
concepts. The report is designed also to suggest programs for further research. The author has done a fairly able job that may be considered a beginning. Naturally all to be said about Freud's concepts will not be said for many years to come. Studies such as this, objective and dispassionate, are a first sign that Freud has found his niche in the history of science. The material is too abundant to be detailed in a review.
