The authors of this book, a psychiatrically trained pediatrician and a dietitian, have produced a worth-while manual on the feeding of children
of all ages. It should be useful, not only to parents to whom it is addressed, but to all who are concerned with children and their eating, physicians, nurses and teachers. In a simple, direct style which leaves little chance for misinterpretation by the anxious parent the book presents the essentials of what and how to feed infants and children. Of utmost importance in the mental hygiene of children is the establishing of emotionally satisfying feeding experiences. The way in which an infant or child is presented with his food is as important for his total well-being as the food itself. This book presents practical suggestions for helping those who have to do with the feeding of children to develop the sympathetic, tolerant understanding of the psychological needs of the baby necessary for the establishing of healthy, emotionally satisfying feeding experiences. If the principles laid down are followed in the feeding of children the chances of a “feeding problem” developing later are slight. Although suggestions are given for the management of anorexia the main goal of this book is a preventive one, that of fostering healthy patterns.
About half the book is concerned with practical suggestions for the selection and preparation of various foods for children. The recipes have all been tested in home use and are further evidence of the practical nature of this book.
