In the third edition of this textbook of the psychology of the first five years of life the author has tried to include the major research and newer knowledge of the fourteen years elapsing since the previous edition. The book is designed to present material pertinent to the field so that it can be used by “parents, teachers and others interested in young children.” The author stresses actual behavior of children and feels that there is too great a tendency in the field of child psychology to swamp all other approaches to understanding the child with a mass of laboratory experimental data. Her treatment is practical and direct. The book is easily readable and is not made tiresome or cumbersome with endless citations about what other workers have done or think. Little reference is made to the contributions of psychoanalysis or of child psychiatry at large to the understanding of young children. The book is one of the publishers’ Home Economics Series and should meet the approval of its prospective audience. The practicing child psychiatrist, or pediatrician will find little which will assist him in his daily work. It is not designed to be used as a manual for parents desirous of help in child rearing.
